The following periods of restriction apply to information contained in the Registers:

Record type Period of restriction
Birth records Birth records are restricted from public access for 100 years and until the person has passed away.
Change of Name records Change of name records are restricted from public access for 100 years and until the person has passed away.
Death records Death records are restricted from public access for 10 years.
Marriage records Marriage records are restricted from public access for 60 years and until both parties to the marriage have passed away.

All records are restricted while the person or people involved are alive.

Once the restriction periods have elapsed, in general anyone may access the records. However, this is subject to the Registrar’s overriding discretion.
