We use the IDMatrix product from credit reporting agency Equifax (External link). This tool meets a high standard of fraud/identity protection assurance.
In this page, ‘Equifax’ means Equifax Group Limited, ABN 26 124 306 958.
Equifax manages a range of databases, including Australia's largest credit reference bureau.
Your privacy and security
BDM does not:
- find out what answers you provide about yourself
- store this information anywhere.
BDM does:
- keep information about the identity documents you provide
- collect some data to prevent fraud.
Equifax does not store the answers you provide when verifying your identity.
Equifax is an authorised provider to the Attorney General Department's Document Verification System.
Equifax's computer network, data storage and data processing services are all located in Australia.
Births Deaths and Marriages (BDM) comply with Victorian privacy laws and Equifax comply with federal privacy laws in providing this service.
Terms and conditions
By using the service, you consent to BDM passing on your personal information (name, residential address, and date of birth) to Equifax.
You consent to Equifax providing an assessment of whether these details match (in whole or part) the information Equifax holds. Equifax does this for the sole purpose of verifying your identity.
Neither BDM nor Equifax store or use the information you provide for any other purpose.
You consent to Equifax contacting State or Commonwealth Government and private sector agencies on your behalf. Equifax may need to contact these agencies to verify non-BDM-issued documents, such as your Driver Licence or Medicare card.
You declare that to the best of your knowledge the information you have provided is true and correct at the date of your application.
You understand that it is an offence to knowingly make a false or misleading representation in an application or document under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 1996.
