The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages website will undergo scheduled maintenance between 4am and 6.30pm (AEST) on Sunday 27 July, 2008. During this time customers will be unable to submit online applications, purchase historical certificates or images, search family history records or view index search result pages, collect images or upload data. The Registry apologises for any inconvenience.

Welcome to the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, part of the Victorian Department of Justice. The Registry has a variety of online products and services that commemorate significant life events of all Victorians.

On this site you can:
  • Apply for a current Victorian certificate
  • Search family history indexes; download an image to your printer
  • Purchase historical images and certificates if you have the registration number and year
  • Collect images purchased within the last 30 days
  • Purchase family history indexes on CD-Rom and microfiche
You can also find information on Registry fees and other services, our Customer Service Charter, links to interstate registries, related sites and legislation.

The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has released a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) for public comment. The RIS details the proposed Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Regulations 2008. The proposed Regulations would replace the existing Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Regulations 1997 which expire on 29 September 2008. Read further information about the RIS.

Current
Certificates
Apply online for these certificates only:
  • your own birth, change of name or marriage certificate
  • the birth or change of name certificate(s) of your children (if aged under 18 years)
  • your single status certificate (no record of marriage)
  • a death certificate (1986 to current).
Download an application form for these certificates:
  • births (1925 to current and pre 1925 if needed for a passport, pension, Consulate, or other legal requirement)
  • changes of name (1904 to current)
  • marriages (1943 to current)
  • deaths (1986 to current)
  • single status (no record marriage).
You can also download an application form to apply for certificates older than the periods described above, or, you can go to the next section and purchase images and certificates of older family history records online.

Historical Index Searches

Images and Certificates
Obtain historical certificates as uncertified images or certified certificates:
  • births (1853 to 1907)
  • marriages (1853 to 1942)
  • deaths (1853 to 1985)
  • Church baptisms, marriages and burials 1836 to 1853
  • Births, Deaths and Marriages on board ships coming to Victoria from 1853 to 1920, including ship's names. (Marine indexes)
Choose one of the following four options:
  • Search family history indexes of births, deaths and marriages dating back to 1836. You can then download an image (uncertified certificate) immediately to your own printer or computer, or, purchase a certified certificate to be mailed to you.
  • Collect images (uncertified certificates) purchased within the last 30 days and download them immediately to your printer or computer. You will need the Image Reference Number from your Tax Invoice.
If you are unable to purchase images or certificates online, you can download an application form and apply by mail or in person for a certified certificate. It will then be mailed to you.
