Online identity verification

To get a certificate, you usually need to prove your identity. You may be able to do this online using Service Victoria. It’s the quickest way to complete your application.

How to prove your identity online

Step 1: Start your application

  1. Start by applying for a certificate or registration.
  2. When asked, enter your phone number.
  3. We’ll text you a link to start the identity check with Service Victoria.

Step 2: Take a photo of your first identity document

When prompted, use your smartphone take a photo of one document from Category 1 (check below).

Step 3: Scan your face

We’ll match your face to your photo ID. We don’t save this.

Step 4: Take a photo of your second identity document

Use your smartphone take a photo of one document from Category 2 (check below).

What you'll need

To prove your identity online, you need:

  • Two identity documents (see below)
  • A smartphone that can take photos.

Identity documents

You need one document from category 1 and one from category 2.

One of the documents must have a photo.

Category 1 – choose one

  • Australian passport (current or expired less than 3 years)
  • Current foreign passport with linked visa
  • Australian birth certificate
  • Australian citizenship certificate
  • ImmiCard (Immigration Card)

Category 2 – choose one

  • Australian driver licence card
  • Medicare card (only if you don’t have a driver licence.

If the names on your documents are different

Enter your name exactly as it appears on each identity document.

If the names don’t match, you’ll also need one of these documents:

  • Change of name certificate
  • Marriage certificate.

The certificate must be from a Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Australia.

All documents must be in good condition. Damaged or worn-out documents won't work.

Smartphone

You must use a smartphone that can take a photo.

You can start your application on a computer, but you’ll need to do the identity check on a smartphone.

Any brand is okay, as long as you can take a photo of yourself and upload it.

Retrying

If you don't pass the first time, you can have another try.

However, you can't come back once you’ve submitted your application. In this case, you can use certified copies of documents instead.

If you can’t prove your identity online

You can provide certified copies of documents instead. You can use more types of documents for this.

Online identity verification is not available for:

  • Early pregnancy loss commemorative certificates
  • Recognised details certificate
  • Family History
