Changes
Changing a certificate is different from fixing a mistake. For example, changing your name or your child's name is a change, not a correction, so there is a different process.
The back of the new certificate shows any changes or corrections made to the certificate. This doesn't include corrections to death certificates.
Corrections
If you think there's a mistake on a certificate, you can apply to have it fixed.
We check all mistakes before fixing them.
Corrections include:
- Simple mistakes like:
- Typographical errors
- Misread handwriting.
- Clarifications and small changes like:
- Adding the town to a place of birth, if it only lists the country
- Adding a middle name, if it's on the birth registration statement but not on the birth certificate.
Changing your name after marriage, separation or divorce

Change your name (adult born overseas)
If you are over the age of 18 and have lived in Victoria for at least 12 months, you can register with us to change your name.
Correct a birth certificate
If there's an error on a birth certificate, you can apply to have it corrected.
Correct a marriage certificate
Correct details of either of the partners, such as their name, date or place of birth.
Correct a death certificate
Correct the death details such as date, place or cause, and add domestic partners.
Correct a change of name
If there's an error on your change of name certificate, you can apply to have it corrected. There's no fee to do this.
Change a record of sex
Adults born in Victoria or living in Victoria can apply to change their record of sex. Parents of a child living in Victoria can apply to change the child's record of sex.
Correct a relationship certificate
Correct details of either of the partners, such as their name, date or place of birth.
