If a Victorian resident dies overseas, you usually don’t need to register the death in Victoria. The death should be registered in the country where the person died. A death certificate is then generally issued by that country.
Smart Traveller’s Someone has died overseas (External link) page gives more information.
An overseas death may be registered in Victoria if the person died:
- In an aircraft during a flight to Victoria
- On board a ship making its way to Victoria
- Normally lived in Victoria or owned property in Victoria
Refer to the ‘Evidence required’ tab for the evidence you’ll need to provide.
We assess all applications before registering an overseas death.
