Marriage certificates are a celebration of a special part of your life. They're also an important personal document that you can use as proof of your wedding for official purposes, such as changing your name on a passport or driver licence.

When ordering a certificate you will need to prove your identity.

Marriages outside Victoria
Marriages which took place outside of Victoria cannot be registered by the Victorian Registry.

If you were married outside Victoria, contact the Registry (External link) of the state, territory or country where the marriage took place.

What we need from you

We'll ask you for the following information during the application process:

1. Details of the marriage

At minimum, you'll be asked for:

  • The given, middle and family names of both parties
  • Place of the marriage
  • Date of the marriage.

2. Proof of your identity

You may be able to prove your identity online. If not you can still prove your identity in other ways. These include:

  • Taking certified copies of your identity documents to our Customer Service Centre or a Justice Service Centre
  • Mailing certified copies to us.

Acceptable documents

One of the easiest ways to prove your identity is by presenting your driver licence (if it confirms your residential address) and your passport.
