Marriage certificates are a celebration of a special part of your life. They're also an important personal document that you can use as proof of your wedding for official purposes, such as changing your name on a passport or driver licence.

When ordering a certificate you will need to provide certified proof of identity documents.

Marriages outside Victoria
If you were married outside Victoria, contact the Registry (External link) of the state, territory or country where the marriage took place.

What we need from you

We'll ask you for the following information during the application process:

1. Details of the marriage

At minimum, you'll be asked for:

  • The first, middle and family names of both parties (including any family names used before marriage)
  • Date of the marriage.

2. Proof of your identity

In most cases, you can prove your identity with certified copies of your driver licence and Medicare card.

Alternatively, there are other ways to prove your identity.

3. Proof that you're eligible to get the certificate

If you're applying for your own certificate, you only need to provide proof of your identity.

If you're applying for someone else's certificate, you also need to prove that you're authorised to do so. See Get someone else's marriage certificate.
